of the way through the timing covers tonight, and the pulley still spins freely, but the stud is snapped pretty clean. I'm guessing the 2-3 times I have pulled the stud out must've weakened it, plus the 102k of mileage on it. I was just cruising along at 75mph w/ the cruise control on, and suddenly I lost power and the engine backfired 4-5 times in rapid succession, and it was dead. I coasted over onto the shoulder and saw the carnage to the timing covers. The only explanation I can offer is that my car is cursed to fail because of the failure of low-cost parts (fuel injector o-rings are what led to the #3 rod turning into a banana and some of the valves getting bent 2 years ago). This is also why I am considering selling it once it is repaired.
